Attorneys welcome misdemeanor diversion program

Prosecuting and defense attorneys alike are hailing the benefits of a new misdemeanor diversion program set to begin in the coming weeks in Santa Barbara County. The program will allow certain low-level misdemeanor offenders to have their criminal charges deferred until they complete a rehabilitative program. Once they pay all required restitution and attend the necessary classes, the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office agrees never to file charges in the case, or to dismiss charges if they have been filed.

Meth vaccine shows promise in early testing

Considered one of the most widely abused and addictive recreational drugs, researchers may be one step closer to knocking down the destructive pull of methamphetamine.A team of scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla has developed a vaccine that appears to protect against meth intoxication in laboratory animals. The next step will be to see if it works in people, too.
